Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to the new AEI.org, which provides expanded coverage of the full range of public policy issues that AEI examines. This FAQ details the improvements one might notice over the previous site and explains any known technical issues one might encounter while browsing the new website. If you have a question that isn't addressed here, please contact our Webmaster by e-mailing webmaster@aei.org.

Changes from the previous site

What happened to the "browse by" features?
Advanced Search using a customized screen with the Google Search Application replaces the need for browse by subject, date, subject, author, type, title drop down menus throughout the site.

Where are all the AEI project subsites?
Smaller projects are listed within their research area rather than taking up space on the home page.

What happened to filtering content by subject?
Research area pages contain features, publications, and event listings in more than thirty subjects, replacing the need to filter content across the whole site.

Can I still sign up for My Watches?
RSS subscriptions are now available for all AEI products, replacing the need for users to sign up for "watches" of their favorite content such research areas, and scholars. Easy instructions for RSS are featured here.

New site features

How can I sign up to receive AEI electronic products?
Users may sign up for all AEI electronic publications; if they are already on AEI lists, this will be reflected in their profile the next time they visit their My AEI.org page.

Can I unsubscribe from mailings?
Yes, simply uncheck an item you've previous selected in your mailing preferences and you will be removed that list.

Can I change my address information online?

Yes, once you've created a detailed profile, please return to it to let us know if your contact information has changed.

What kind of special messages might I get from AEI?
We want to communicate with you, but we don't want to clutter up your inbox. Please check your My AEI.org page for personal notices, premium content, and special offers.

How can I get recommendations of content I might be interested in?
A recommendation engine is available on the My AEI.org page for registered users here.

Do I have to sign up to use the website?
Browsing and viewing content on the site is free and available without registration. To use additional features, sign up for mailings and events, and make donations or buy books, you will need to create an account.

Visitors will need to create a basic profile registration for the site in order to save articles, forward emails, sign up for electronic publications, and enter their interests. (Basic registration requires first and last name, e-mail address, zip code, and a password.)

Visitors will need to create a detailed profile registration for the site in order to sign up for events, make donations, or buy books. (Detailed registration will require all of the above information, plus address, phone, work sector, and relationship with AEI.)

Technical issues

Why does my display not seem right?
Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) has some known display issues. If you're using IE6, we recommend upgrading to IE8. To check if you have IE6, visit "Help" on your browser menu bar and then click "About Internet Explorer" and it will display the version you are running.

My save and e-mail icons don't seem to be working.
Please check to make sure that pop-ups aren't being blocked for this site.

How do I jump to other pages in a listing?
The simplified navigation currently doesn't provide a way to jump to pages other than the previous or next in a listing. However, if you would like to jump around, you can simply change the page number in the URL bar. For example, if you would like to jump to page 12 of the listing of articles, you would simply have to change http://www.aei.org/articles?page=1 to http://www.aei.org/articles?page=12.

I have a new e-mail address and would like to change my user name.
Please contact Laura Drinkwine at Laura.Drinkwine@aei.org to change your user name.
