Internship Opportunities
 

 

Economic Policy Studies


Economic Policy Studies: An intern in this area will work with Senior Fellow Kevin Hassett. Assignments include researching tax policy, preparing for tax seminars, and writing economic briefs. Desired skills: Word, Excel, Internet research skills, and familiarity with Lexis-Nexis required. An interest in sports statistics is a plus.

Monetary Policy: This internship is under the direction of Vincent Reinhart, AEI Resident Scholar and former director of the Federal Reserve Board's Division of Monetary Affairs. He works on a variety of issues concerning the policies of the Federal Reserve, Treasury and related agencies. Current work includes analysis of the financial crisis and capital flows projects. Internship tasks include finding and compiling datasets for research projects, modeling and regression analysis, as well as various research and administrative projects in support of Mr. Reinhart's work. A strong knowledge of Excel is highly encouraged.

An intern in this area will work with AEI President Arthur Brooks. Assignments include researching for various long-term projects, aiding presentation preparation, and editing articles and briefs. Desired skills: Background in economics, Word, Excel, Internet research skills, and familiarity statistical software such as STATA, SPSS or EViews.

Health Policy: Interns will work with Resident Scholars Joe Antos, Jack Calfee, Bob Helms, and Tom Miller on health policy studies at AEI. Assignments include health policy issues ranging from current Medicare legislation to pharmaceutical regulation to global public health. Economics, bioscience, or science majors are preferred. Knowledge of health policy and the ability to do Internet searches and spreadsheet data entry required.

International Trade and Finance: Resident Scholar Claude Barfield's primary areas of study are international trade policy, U.S. competitiveness, and science and technology policy. Economics or public policy students are preferred. Proficiency with Excel spreadsheets and statistical software packages a plus.

International Development: Resident Fellow Roger Bate researches U.S. and international aid policy in Africa and the developing world. His intern will research foreign aid policy with a focus on Africa. Desired skills for the position are strong research skills and knowledge of economic principles and demonstrated experience/study of aid policy.

Senior Fellow Newt Gingrich: Speaker Gingrich is well known as the architect of the "Contract with America" that led the Republican Party to victory in 1994 by capturing the majority in the U.S. House for the first time in forty years. As an author, Newt has published sixteen books including 10 fiction and non-fiction New York Times best-sellers. His non-fiction books include his latest, Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less, in addition to others such as Real Change, Winning the Future: A 21st Century Contract with America, To Renew America, Lessons Learned the Hard Way, Saving Lives & Saving Money, Window of Opportunity, The Art of Transformation, and Rediscovering God in America. He is also the author of these fiction books: Gettysburg, Grant Comes East, Never Call Retreat: Lee and Grant the Final Victory, 1945, Pearl Harbor: A Novel of December the 8, and his latest, Days of Infamy. All of these novels are active history studies in the lessons of warfare based on fictional accounts of historical wartime battles and their aftermaths.

Intern assignments include assisting with research on contemporary policy issues. Topics include congressional politics, foreign affairs, science, technology, fiscal issues, and the environment.

Desired skills: Strong research skills, familiarity with the various news databases, coursework in economics, political science, and applied sciences. Previous office experience is preferred.

Demographics/Political Economy: Resident Scholar Nicholas Eberstadt focuses on global demographic trends and economic development, with a current emphasis on Russia, China, and other developing nations. He also researches North Korea, poverty in the United States, foreign aid, and global health and mortality (especially HIV/AIDS). Intern will do quantitative work, background research, fact-checking, and editing for articles and ongoing projects. Attention to detail and experience with Excel a must.

National Research Initiative: AEI's National Research Initiative (NRI) seeks to identify and support research by university-based academics, emerging scholars, and other intellectuals engaged in the exploration of pressing public policy issues. NRI projects cover a wide variety of topics in U.S. domestic policy, including income inequality, immigration, and health care. Duties will include specific research tasks for NRI scholars, book marketing efforts, compiling materials for NRI newsletters, and some administrative support. Individuals with an interest in domestic policy and background in economics and/or political science are encouraged to apply.

Social and Political Studies


Public Opinion: Senior Fellow Karlyn Bowman is an expert on American politics and public opinion. Assignments include: Scholarly research for public opinion studies and articles, assisting in the planning and coordination of monthly Political Report publications, editing, and some data-entry.

American History Education: Intern will conduct research for forthcoming works about American history, assist in ongoing communications responsibilities related to book publication and scholar's endeavors to promote children's understanding of American history, and help to plan events on topics related to American history education. This position requires excellent writing, research, and computer skills. Successful applicants will be attentive to detail, comfortable working with firm and soft deadlines, and able to handle and prioritize multiple tasks. A background in American history, education, or literature is preferred.

Education Policy: Assignments under Resident Scholar Frederick Hess include researching school choice, education politics, school reform, and the history of the American education system. The intern will assist in ongoing responsibilities associated with AEI's Education Program, including research and editing, event planning, and administrative tasks.

American Politics: Interns under Norman Ornstein and John Fortier will work primarily with the AEI-Brookings Election Reform Project. Other duties will include research on the presidential and congressional races for AEI's Election Watch Series, the Continuity of Government Commission, and current political events for both scholars' weekly columns.

Women's Studies: Christina Hoff Sommers studies feminism and American culture, American adolescents, and morality in American society. A former university philosophy professor, she is the author of Who Stole Feminism? and The War against Boys. An intern would help with various projects including research on women's studies programs, women and science, and feminism. Strong research and writing skills are necessary.

Foreign and Defense Studies


Middle Eastern Studies: Danielle Pletka, VP of AEI's Foreign and Defense Studies Department, focuses on the Arab World and Southeast Asia. Strong, coherent writing skills a must for this internship. Applicants should have a background in Middle East/Central Asian studies while having broader foreign policy interests. Fluency in French, Arabic, or Farsi is a plus.

Russian Studies: Resident Scholar Leon Aron directs AEI's Russian Studies program. He is the midst of writing a book on the intellectual history of the Soviet collapse and the fate of liberalism in Russia. Desired skills: The ideal intern candidate will have a strong interest in Russian current affairs and history, as well as the history of ideas. A capacity and enthusiasm for archival research and reading fluency in Russian language are necessary. Assignments include: The Russian Studies intern will be responsible for researching current events in Russian, particularly political and cultural changes since the fall of Communism, the Russian economy and Russian foreign policy. The intern will also conduct research in support of journal publications, op-eds, and books by AEI scholars, as well as assist in the organization of AEI conferences and panel discussions.

Defense and Security Studies: Resident Scholars Frederick Kagan and Thomas Donnelly specialize in defense and security policy studies. Interns will assist in organizing panel discussions and conferences, conduct research on emerging defense policy issues, and assist in other elements of the defense policy program at AEI. Proficiency in Arabic or Farsi is a plus.

Critical Threats Project: The Critical Threats Project tracks and analyzes current challenges to American national security, specifically those relating to Iran, Pakistan, the Levant, the Caucasus, the Horn of Africa, and al-Qaeda and associated movements in general. Interns will assist in producing research dossiers, analytical and data products, and other materials for a Critical Threats webpage. Initiative, dedication to project goals, work ethic, and creativity are highly valued. Proficiency in Arabic, Farsi, Urdu, Russian, or Pashto is desired but not required.

Global Governance Watch: A partnership between AEI and the Federalist Society, Global Governance Watch focuses on promoting transparency and accountability in NGOs and international organizations. Excellent research skills, writing skills and web design are a plus.

Resident Scholar Michael Rubin's major research area is the Middle East, with special focus on Iran, Iraq, Turkey, and Kurdish society. The intern candidate is required to demonstrate a strong interest in the Middle Eastern affairs and have excellent writing skills. Main tasks include, but are not limited to, carrying out research, writing, and helping prepare for conferences and meetings. Dr. Rubin is in the midst of writing a book on the topic of engagement with adversarial regimes. The intern will be asked to assist in research for the project as well. Language fluency in Farsi and Arabic is a plus.

Advanced Strategic Studies: Resident Scholar Gary Schmitt's work focuses on longer-term strategic issues that will affect America's security at home and its ability to lead abroad. Assignments involve researching U.S. foreign policy and emerging international security threats. Recent projects have addressed the future of the NATO alliance, European counterterrorism policy, and the rise of China.

Japanese Studies: An intern in this department will work under Resident Scholar Michael Auslin, head of AEI's Japan Studies Program. Dr. Auslin is currently focusing on Japanese strategic thinking and security doctrine, as well as Asian maritime security issues. Tasks include: researching, in Japanese and English, topics in Japan's national security, maritime security issues, and Asia's strategic security environment. The intern will also conduct research in support of publications and assist in the organization of AEI conferences and panel discussions. The ideal candidate for this position will have an interest in Japanese and Asian security affairs and reading ability in Japanese language.

Asian Studies: This internship, under the direction of Resident Fellow Dan Blumenthal, will focus primarily on Asian security initiatives and US strategy in the region. Projects will focus on China, Japan, North Korea, and Southeast Asia. Assignments include: researching Chinese defense capabilities, US-China relations, and Cross Strait issues.

Business, Editing, Marketing, and Management


Communications/List Management: This internship is an excellent opportunity to learn how a nonprofit organization manages its contact information and promotes its products. The intern will learn how to use the Raiser's Edge, a database program commonly used by think tanks, schools, and other nonprofit organizations; review and update constituent contact information; help generate mailing lists for the promotion of AEI publications and events; and help with other special projects. The database skills learned will be valuable in a wide variety of nonprofit and for-profit career paths. Good logic skills, experience with Excel and/or database programs, and attention to detail are necessary. An entrepreneurial spirit and an interest in nonprofit management, communications, marketing, fundraising, and/or public policy will be helpful.

Government Relations: The mission of the Government Relations Department is to promote AEI's scholarship to top government officials in the White House, in Federal Agencies, and on Capitol Hill. Successful candidates will be self-starters with attention to detail and enthusiasm for AEI's mission of promoting free enterprise, limited government, strong national defense, and vital cultural institutions.

Project on American Values and Capitalism: The project is a new initiative aimed at educating evangelical college students on the fundamentals of free markets and the relationship between these fundamentals and Christianity. Responsibilities will include assisting in the planning and implementation of multiple events, facilitating focus group research, developing marketing to a college-aged evangelical audience, assisting in the development of a series of monographs on the relationship between markets and various specific policy issues, managing and updating multiple data lists, and other administrative tasks. Requirements include experience with Microsoft Excel, attention to detail, event planning experience, and knowledge of Christian higher education.

Marketing: The marketing department's internships are designed to give interns a wide range of experiences in business administration and marketing realms with specific emphasis on AEI's public policy work. Interns will gain particular insight into non-profit administration. Assignments: Interns will assist with daily aspects of marketing and development as well as special projects. Projects will include assisting with marketing research; creating and using spreadsheets for marketing analysis; grant proposal preparations; and grant tracking. Interns will conduct donor analysis, including research and identification of potential donors by areas of interest, geography, and philanthropy. Corporate and foundation relations are an integral part of the internship including work with Fortune 500 corporate donors. The department manages an $18 million budget and works directly with AEI's executive office and all AEI scholars. Desired skills: Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, and internet research capabilities. Attention to detail a must and an interest in marketing, business, and non-profits is important.

Public Affairs: The Public Affairs department acts as the liaison between AEI scholars and the media. This position is a hands-on opportunity to apply public relations to media market research. Intern should be organized and knowledgeable about news media and current events.

Publications Editing: This is an ideal position for exposure to the broad spectrum of AEI scholars' research. Assignments include writing articles about AEI conferences and other noteworthy events; proofreading and editing scholarly research, Outlooks, On the Issues, daily and bi-weekly e-newsletters, and other important Institute projects as assigned; posting fresh content (articles, lectures, and other publications) on AEI's website every day; and monitoring the quality of online content. The ideal candidate will be an excellent writer, be familiar with the Chicago Manual of Style, and have experience in student journalism or student academic publishing.

The American.com: The American is AEI's national magazine focusing on business, economics, and public affairs. It offers interns significant opportunities to develop valuable skills for careers in journalism. Interns will fact-check and copy-edit articles for the magazine's print edition. They will also aid the managing editor in editing and maintaining the web site at American.com.
