Edward B. Rust, Jr., chairman of the Board of Trustees of the American Enterprise Institute, has announced that J. Joe Ricketts was elected to the board at its December 8 meeting.

Ricketts is chairman and co-chief executive officer of Ameritrade Holding Corporation, a pioneering firm in discount and online securities trading that also offers securities-clearing and other financial services. He was named chairman and chief executive officer of the company in 1981, and became co-chief executive officer in March 1999.

Ricketts was among the first to enter the discount brokerage market when, in 1975, he founded First Omaha Securities, a predecessor to Ameritrade. His firm was the first to introduce touch-tone trading (in 1988), and it eventually purchased the first firm to offer Internet trades. He is a current member of the Board of Trustees for Father Flanagan’s Boys’ Home ("Boys Town") and a member of the Board of Directors of Creighton University, his alma mater.
