In July 2013, Rick Hess of AEI’s Education Policy Studies team will hold the first “Ed Policy Academy” for graduate students in the social sciences, public policy, business, and law. This summer institute will give promising graduate students an opportunity to explore the contours of current education debates with an intimate group of leading scholars.

Offering a mix of seminars, evening speakers, and cohort-building activities, the program will seek to expand participants’ interest in pressing questions of education policy and provide a firm academic grounding on substantive debates. Academy students will spend three intensive days in class with leading scholars covering topics central to education policy: school choice, teacher quality, and school finance, to name a few.

Students who attend will gain exposure to peers from around the country and across disciplines. We anticipate that this program will feature the same dynamic, intellectually open, and thought-provoking environment that is a hallmark of AEI Education events and scholarship.

The 2013 Ed Policy Academy will take place in Denver, Colorado. We will begin with a dinner on the night of Sunday, July 28; the program will conclude on Thursday, August 1.

Who Should Apply?

We seek to enroll students from a wide range of disciplines, including those studying the social sciences and education as well as promising candidates pursuing degrees in public policy, business, and law. Selected students will likely be entering their second or third year of graduate studies and have a vested interest in learning more about education policy from an academic perspective.

Up to 18 students will be selected to participate in the Academy. All students receive fully funded travel, hotel accommodations, and meals. This is a full-time endeavor. Students will attend multiple class sessions each day and will be expected to join their cohort for dinner in the evening. Keynote guests at each dinner will be drawn from the fields of academia, policy research, and the politics of education reform.

Nominations are welcome for the Ed Policy Academy. If you send one or more outstanding students’ names and email addresses to [email protected], the program’s staff will contact the students with application information.
