I thought you might be interested in what Danielle Pletka (dpletka@aei.org), Vice President for Foreign and Defense Policy Studies at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), had to say about the decision of the Egyptian High Court to dissolve the new parliament:

  • The Egyptian revolution has become a slow-motion train wreck, a cliff notes version of how not to win a revolution
    •  
  • The faults don’t all lie with the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, or the Muslim Brotherhood, or the public that isn’t sure what it wants. It also lies with:
       
    • a liberal opposition that knows its values but can’t seem to find either a party or a candidate to express them
      •  
    • the international community, which has made clear that even though Mubarak is gone, gee, they kinda miss him (yes, I mean you Obama White House)
      •  
    • an entrenched Arab leadership in the Gulf that has viewed the changes in Egypt with horror and done everything possible to undermine them.

  • As a long-time Senate Committee on Foreign Relation senior professional staff member for the Near East and South Asia, Danielle Pletka was the point person on Middle East, Pakistan, India and Afghanistan issues. As the vice president for foreign and defense policy studies at AEI, Pletka writes on national security matters with a focus on Iran and weapons proliferation, the Middle East, Syria, Israel and the Arab Spring. She also studies and writes about South Asia: Pakistan, India and Afghanistan.


    Pletka is the co-editor of “Dissent and Reform in the Arab World: Empowering Democrats” (AEI Press, 2008) and the co-author of “Containing and Deterring a Nuclear Iran” (AEI Press, 2011). Her most recent study, “Iranian influence in the Levant, Egypt, Iraq, and Afghanistan,” was published in May 2012. She is currently working on a follow-up report on U.S.–Iranian competitive strategies in the Middle East, to be published in the summer of 2013.
