The Bureau of Labor Statistics adjusts monthly data on employment to smooth out routine seasonal changes. In 10 of the last 12 months, the BLS has adjusted its numbers by more than one standard deviation from its historical average. Standard deviation is used to measure how far from the average a data point falls to determine how abnormal the data are.
