Transparency and Accountability in Foreign Aid

Senator Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) has been the Senate's leading champion for more transparency in international federal spending. The issue is becoming critical as U.S. government expenditures on the War on Terror and on global health increase. At this event, Senator Coburn will offer three case studies: the U.S. Agency for International Development's involvement in combating malaria, the Broadcasting Board of Governors' Iran broadcasting situation, and the ongoing renovation of the United Nations' Manhattan headquarters to demonstrate why transparency is the first and most difficult step toward reforming foreign spending programs and holding them accountable. Following his presentation, Senator Coburn will answer questions about what can be done to promote transparency in U.S. foreign aid programs.
