Economic Lessons from Indiana

Since his inauguration as governor of Indiana in January 2005, Mitch Daniels has been one of the most innovative governors in the country. Under his leadership, Indiana residents have been the recipients of novel policies, particularly in the economic realm. As a result, unemployment in Indiana is the lowest it has been in six years and the lowest in the Midwest; records have been broken for new investment and new jobs coming to the state; the size of state government has been reduced by more than 10 percent; and the state budget is balanced, with a surplus replacing debt.

In addition, Indiana is the only state in the nation with a fully-funded ten-year plan for building roads, telecommunications reform has been enacted, and a health savings account–model insurance program for low-income Hoosiers is now providing coverage to many of the state’s uninsured. Governor Daniels and the Indiana General Assembly are now working together in a bipartisan effort to provide Indiana residents with the largest tax reduction in state history through historic property tax reform.

At this event, Governor Daniels will discuss his strategy of governing in Indiana--“Win or lose, may I be brave in the attempt”--and how his economic proposals have yielded results.
