U.S.-Chinese economic relations are again coming sharply into focus. As the presidential campaign heats up and as the U.S. economy flirts with recession, presidential candidates are facing calls to pledge stronger action in response to China’s presumed unfair trade practices. There are already many bills pending in Congress to use trade measures to counteract China’s currency misalignment.

Panelists at this seminar will offer perspectives on how a new U.S. administration should approach U.S.-Chinese trade relations. Speakers will include Philip I. Levy, a resident scholar at AEI; Scott Paul, executive director of the Alliance for American Manufacturing; Eswar S. Prasad, former division chief of the International Monetary Fund’s Asia and Pacific department, China division; and Brad W. Setser, a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and an expert on Chinese exchange rate policy. Desmond Lachman of AEI will moderate.
