AEI's standing in the national media is unmatched by any other policy research institute. The work of AEI scholars is cited more frequently and is published far more often in the leading U.S. newspapers and news magazines than the work of scholars at other national think tanks. Similarly, AEI scholars appear more often on television than their peers at rival research institutes.
Scholars contribute regularly to radio and television programs. William Schneider is seen worldwide daily as CNN's senior political analyst. Leon Aron provides weekly commentary to the Voice of America, and John H. Makin weighs in once a month on PBS's Nightly Business Report. In addition, several AEI fellows have regular assignments or advisory roles with leading publications. Mr. Schneider is a contributing editor of the opinion page of the Los Angeles Times and the Atlantic Monthly, and his columns appear weekly in National Journal. James K. Glassman writes a weekly column published in the Washington Post. In November, David Frum became a columnist for National Review. Irving Kristol is editor of the Public Interest. Norman J. Ornstein is a columnist for Roll Call and a member of the Board of Contributors of USA Today. Karlyn H. Bowman writes a biweekly column for Roll Call called "POLLitics," which provides members of Congress and their staffs with insightful analysis of current public opinion trends. Joshua Muravchik is on the editorial boards of World Affairs and the Journal of Democracy. Richard Perle is a member of the Board of Directors of the Jerusalem Post. Scott Gottlieb writes the Gilder Biotechnology Report and is a staff writer for the British Medical Journal.
AEI scholars are also active in Internet publishing. Mr. Glassman is the host of TechCentralStation.com, a website providing news and commentary on technology issues related to business, defense, and public policy; Kevin A. Hassett writes a column for the website on trends in the U.S. economy. Michael A. Ledeen and Michael Novak are contributing editors of National Review Online, for which Mr. Frum writes a daily journal.
In addition to those regular assignments and editorial roles, the Institute's scholars write hundreds of pieces a year for other outlets. To take one prolific example: Since joining the Institute in June, resident fellow Mr. Gottlieb has had articles published in Barron's, the Los Angeles Times, the New York Sun, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, the American Spectator, Forbes, Tech Central Station, and the Weekly Standard.
Ben J. Wattenberg hosts PBS's Think Tank, a weekly policy program in its tenth season. Recent shows in the series have addressed education issues, the population explosion, the apparent decline of the West, U.S. involvement in Middle Eastern affairs, and strategies for protecting the environment while boosting the economies of developing nations.
