Speaker Biographies

Natale Bellocchi is chairman of Bellocchi & Company, LLC. He also writes a column for the Taipei Times and consults for the State Department. Mr. Bellocchi was previously U.S. Ambassador to Botswana (1985-88) and chairman of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) from August 1990 until December 1995. He was also the International Affairs Advisor at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (1988-90) and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research (1981-85).

Thomas Donnelly is a resident fellow at AEI and author of AEI's National Security Outlook. Before coming to AEI, he served as the director of strategic communications and initiatives at Lockheed Martin and deputy executive director of the Project for the New American Century. From 1995 to 1999, he was the policy group director for the Committee on National Security (now the Committee on Armed Services) in the U.S. House of Representatives. Mr. Donnelly has also been the executive director of the National Interest, editor of the Army Times, and deputy editor of Defense News. He is the author of several books, including Rebuilding America's Defenses: Strategy, Forces and Resources for a New Century (2000).

Jeane J. Kirkpatrick is a senior fellow and the director of foreign policy and defense studies at AEI. She was the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations and a member of the President's Cabinet and National Security Council during the Reagan administration. She was also the chair of the U.S. delegation to the UN Human Rights Commission in 2003. She has served on various commissions on national security, including the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board (1986-1992), Defense Policy Review Board (1985-1993), and Presidential Commission on Space and on Nuclear Weapons. She was awarded the Medal of Freedom in 1985. She serves on several boards including Freedom House, U.N. Watch, and Empower America. She held the Chair as Leavey Professor of Government at Georgetown University (1967-2002). She is the author the forthcoming book, Good Intentions: Making War To Keep The Peace.

Samantha F. Ravich is the vice president for proliferation studies at The Long Term Strategy Project (LTSP). Before coming to the LTSP, she served as a special advisor for National Security Affairs to Vice President Richard B. Cheney from March of 2001 through August of 2003, where she focused on the evolving nature of Islam, democracy, and proliferation in the Middle East and Asia. Ms. Ravich was also previously a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and the portfolio manager for the Asian and Middle East International Security projects for the Smith Richardson Foundation. She is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, where she was awarded an International Affairs Fellowship in 2000 and named a George S. Franklin fellow in 2001. She is the author of Marketization and Democracy: East Asian Experiences (Cambridge University Press, 2000).
