Congressional voting patterns have historically been influenced by party membership and the spread and diversity of viewpoints within the two major parties. The authors examine voting patterns to trace changes in party orientation during the past thirty years. They argue that realignment has sharpened differences between the parties, increased their homogeneity, and heightened the degree to which they are oriented along economic lines.
