Of special interest this year are Robert Goldwin's essays about the Law of the Sea Treaty, which is expected to be taken up by the Senate this fall.

Praise for Why Blacks, Women, and Jews Are Not Mentioned in the Constitution, and Other Unorthodox Views:

"The essays of Robert Goldwin encourage me to think that political philosophy has a future. Certainly rulers counseled by Goldwin would rule benevolently and wisely. They would be  neither wreckers of hallowed custom nor slaves to it. Custom would be constantly  tested for congruence with the principles of  Madison, Locke, and other great thinkers of  the democratic tradition....Robert Goldwin is devoted to the traditions of individual liberty and democracy. . . . If everyone had Bob Goldwin for a teacher, there would be less muddle and ignorance. . . . There would be less idle pedantry as well."
--from the foreword by Edwin M. Yoder, Jr.

"Robert Goldwin is a great liberator from clichés. He combines an inquiring intellect, a life spent in government and academia, and an elegant mode of expression to make this an exciting book. It is also a useful book, in the sense that thoughtful persons will keep returning to it as a sound guide to thinking about all kinds of important questions in our lives as citizens, questions about the Constitution, human rights, higher education, and much more."
--Allan Bloom, University of Chicago, author of The Closing of the American Mind

"Robert Goldwin is identified as a 'conservative' scholar in most circles, but his conservatism is of the old school -identified with values, rather than causes. His book reflects the solid scholarship of a thoughtful professional. And equally important, Dr. Goldwin puts all this thoughtful  stuff in a highly readable style."
--Abner J. Mikva, U.S. Circuit Judge

"At long last, the wit and wisdom Goldwin assembled. This volume shows a clear mind and a masterful pen. There's a fine fit between the author and subject, between the Enlightenment democratic pioneer and this enlightening democratic thinker."'
--Kenneth L. Adelman, former director, Arms Control and Disarmament Agency

Robert A. Goldwin was formerly a resident scholar and director of constitutional studies at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C. He has taught political science at the University of Chicago and Kenyon College and was dean of St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland.
