In the decade since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, America’s armed forces have been called upon to perform a large number of extremely varied of missions, from lightning-quick invasions to persistent counterinsurgency campaigns and global counterterrorist manhunts. America’s men and women in uniform have shown amazing tenacity and adaptability and achieved startling successes; but these have come at a cost. Beyond the physical casualties, the high rates of deployment and the constant though sporadic fighting have taken a toll on service members, their families, and their equipment. And now America’s military is being asked to return another “peace dividend” – a dividend beyond the peace itself – in the pursuit of reducing America’s spiraling debt and deficit.

On September 12, 2011, Congressman Howard P. “Buck” McKeon, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, will deliver a keynote address at AEI at 10:30 AM that reflects upon on the experience of America’s armed forces since the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, assesses the current condition of the military services and considers their ability to respond to the challenges and threats they will face in the years ahead.

Speaker Biographies

Howard P. “Buck” McKeon represents California’s 25th District and serves as chairman of the House Armed Services Committee in the 112th Congress. In this position, Rep. McKeon has worked to ensure our troops deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq and around the world have the equipment, resources, authorities, training and time they need to successfully complete their missions and return home; to build on the committee’s strong bipartisan tradition of providing our warfighters and their families with the resources and support they need; and to invest in the capabilities and force structure needed to protect the United States from tomorrow’s threats, while mandating fiscal responsibility, accountability and transparency from the Department of Defense. Rep. McKeon was first named ranking member of the committee in June 2009. Prior to this committee appointment, he was the top Republican on the Education and the Workforce Committee for close to three years, where he advanced conservative policies supporting school choice, teacher quality and accountability, and higher education access and affordability. In early 2006, Rep. McKeon was the committee’s chairman, replacing Rep. John Boehner (R-OH), who stepped down after becoming House Majority Leader. Before that, he headed the House Subcommittee on 21st Century Competitiveness, which examined issues such as higher education, technology in education, teacher training, job training and welfare reform. In addition to his official committees, Rep. McKeon is also a member of the Republican Study Committee and founder of the Congressional Unmanned Systems Caucus.
