Speaker Biographies

Jared Bernstein is a senior economist at the Economic Policy Institute. His areas of research include income and wage inequality, technology’s impact on wages and employment, low-wage labor markets and poverty, minimum wage analysis, and international comparisons. Between 1995 and 1996, he held the post of deputy chief economist at the U.S. Department of Labor. He has published extensively in popular and academic journals, including the American Prospect and Research in Economics and Statistics, and is the coauthor of six editions of the book State of Working America.

Kevin A. Hassett is director of economic policy studies and a resident scholar at AEI. Before joining AEI, Mr. Hassett was a senior economist at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and an associate professor of economics and finance at the Graduate School of Business of Columbia University. He was the chief economic adviser to Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) during the 2000 primaries. He has also served as a policy consultant to the U.S. Department of the Treasury during the former Bush and Clinton administrations. Mr. Hassett is a member of the Joint Committee on Taxation’s Dynamic Scoring Advisory Panel. He is the author, coauthor, or editor of six books on economics and economic policy. He has published scholarly articles in the American Economic Review, the Economic Journal, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Review of Economics and Statistics, the Journal of Public Economics, and many other professional journals. His popular writings have been published in the Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic Monthly, USA Today, the Washington Post, and numerous other outlets. His economic commentaries are regularly aired on radio and television, including recent appearances on the Today Show, the CBS Morning Show, Newshour with Jim Lehrer, Hardball, Moneyline, and Power Lunch.

John H. Makin is a resident scholar at AEI and a principal at Caxton Associates in New York City, a major investor in foreign exchange, commodity, and currency markets. Before joining both AEI and Caxton, Mr. Makin was director of the Institute for Economic Research and professor of economics at the University of Washington in Seattle. He has served as a consultant to the U.S. Treasury, the Federal Reserve System, the International Monetary Fund, the Bank of Japan, and numerous leading corporations. He was a member of the panel of Economic Advisers of the Congressional Budget Office. From 1988 to 1992, Mr. Makin served as chairman of the Japan-United States Friendship Commission, which administers $4.5 million in research grants on Japan-U.S. policy research and cultural exchange. He testifies frequently before both houses of Congress on issues such as international competitiveness, trade, tax, and budget policy. Mr. Makin is coauthor of Debt and Taxes: How America Got into Its Budget Mess and What to Do about It (1994) and has written or edited more than a dozen books on a wide range of economic subjects.

Mark M. Zandi is chief economist and cofounder of Economy.com, Inc. He directs Economy.com’s research and consulting activities for businesses, governments, and other institutions. The firm also maintains online databases of economic and financial time series and operates a number of web sites, including The Dismal Scientist, Freelunch.com, and Research@economy.com. Mr. Zandi’s research interests include macroeconomic, financial, and regional economics and the determinants of mortgage foreclosure and personal bankruptcy, an analysis of the economic impact of various tax and government spending policies, and an assessment of the appropriate policy response to bubbles in asset markets. In addition, Mr. Zandi conducts regular briefings on the economy. He is frequently quoted in national and regional news outlets, including the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Business Week, Barron’s, Fortune, Money, USA Today, Investor’s Business Daily, Newsweek, CBS MarketWatch, and the American Banker. He has also appeared or spoken on Wall Street Week, ABC’s World News Tonight, CBS Evening News, CNN, the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, and NPR’s Morning Edition and ABC, CBS, and CNN Radio.
