Speaker Biographies
Karlyn H. Bowman is a resident fellow at AEI. She joined the Institute in 1979 and was managing editor of Public Opinion magazine until 1990. From 1990 to 1995, she was the editor of The American Enterprise, the Institute's flagship magazine. Today she continues to work on the magazine as editor of its public opinion section. In 2002, she inaugurated a series of Public Opinion Studies that are available on AEI's website, which include "America after 9/11" and "Attitudes toward Homosexuality and Gay Marriage." She contributed a chapter on polling to The Permanent Campaign and Its Future (AEI-Brookings, 2001), and is a contributing author to The Neocon Reader.
Jeane J. Kirkpatrick is a senior fellow at AEI and a professor of government at Georgetown University, where she held the Leavey chair from 1967-2002. She was the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations and a member of the President Ronald Reagan's cabinet and National Security Council. She has served on various commissions on national security, including the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board (1986-1992), Defense Policy Review Board (1985-1993), and Presidential Commissions on Space and on Nuclear Weapons. She was awarded the Medal of Freedom in 1985. She serves on the boards of Freedom House, U.N. Watch, Empower America, the Ethics and Public Policy Center, and numerous other organizations. She is the author of numerous books and articles, including Good Intentions: Making War to Keep the Peace (AEI Press, forthcoming), and is a contributing author to The Neocon Reader.
Charles Krauthammer is an essayist and syndicated columnist. His Washington Post column appears in more than 130 newspapers worldwide. He writes a monthly essay for Time magazine and contributes frequently to The Weekly Standard, The New Republic, the National Interest, and other journals. His columns have been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished commentary; his essays, the National Magazine Award for Essays and Criticism. He is the recipient of the Bradley Prize for promotion of liberal democracy and American institutions, and the American Enterprise Institute's highest honor, the Irving Kristol Award. Mr. Krauthammer is a contributing author to The Neocon Reader.
Charles Murray is the W.H. Brady Scholar in Culture and Freedom at AEI. A political scientist by training, he researches family, culture, crime, education, and welfare. His most recent book, published in 2003, is Human Accomplishment: The Pursuit of Excellence in the Arts and Sciences, 800 B.C. to 1950 (HarperCollins, 2003). His other works include Losing Ground: American Social Policy, 1950-1980 (Basic Books, 1984); In Pursuit: Of Happiness and Good Government (Simon & Schuster, 1988); The Bell Curve: Intelligence and Class Structure in American Life (with Richard J. Herrnstein, Free Press, 1994); and What It Means to Be a Libertarian: A Personal Interpretation (Broadway Books, 1997).
Irwin M. Stelzer is a senior fellow and director of Hudson Institute's Center for Economic Policy. Before joining Hudson in 1998, he was a resident scholar and director of regulatory policy studies at AEI. He is the U.S. economic and political columnist for the Sunday Times (London) and the Courier Mail (Australia), a contributing editor of The Weekly Standard, and a member of the publication committee of The Public Interest. Mr. Stelzer founded National Economic Research Associates, Inc. (NERA) in 1961, and has taught at Cornell University, the University of Connecticut, and New York University. His publications include Selected Antitrust Cases: Landmark Decisions (R.D. Irwin, 1955); The Antitrust Laws: A Primer (with John H. Shenefield, AEI Press, 1993); The United States, a United Europe, and the United Kingdom: Three Characters in Search of a Policy (2001); and most recently, The Neocon Reader (editor, Grove Press, January 2005).
