Speaker biographies
Nicholas Eberstadt holds the Henry Wendt Chair in Political Economy at AEI and is a senior adviser to the National Bureau of Asian Research in Seattle. He serves on the advisory board of the Korea Economic Institute of America and is a founding member of the U.S. Committee for Human Rights in North Korea. Mr. Eberstadt is regularly consulted by governmental and international organizations, including the U.S. Census Bureau, the U.S. State Department, USAID, and the World Bank. He has published over 300 studies and articles in scholarly and popular journals, mainly on topics in demography, international development, and East Asian security. His dozen-plus books and monographs include The Poverty of Communism (Transaction, 1988), The Tyranny of Numbers (AEI Press, 1995), The End of North Korea (AEI Press, 1999), Korea’s Future and the Great Power (National Bureau of Asian Research, 2001), The North Korean Economy: Between Crisis and Catastrophe (Transaction, 2007), and the forthcoming Europe’s Coming Demographic Challenge: Unlocking the Value of Health (AEI Press).
Seymour Garte is a professor of environmental and occupational health at the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health. His book, Where We Stand: A Surprising Look at the Real State of Our Planet (Amacom, 2007) presents evidence that the state of the environment and human welfare are improving: air and water are getting cleaner, cancer rates are decreasing, and forestation is improving. Mr. Garte has been a working scientist for over thirty years, specializing in molecular biomarkers and genetic susceptibility in human exposure to environmental toxicants. His articles have appeared in various publications, most recently Mutation Research, Free Radical Biology and Medicine, and The International Journal of Hygiene and Environmental Health. Mr. Garte’s research has been funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the National Cancer Institute, and the American Cancer Society.
Steven F. Hayward is the F. K. Weyerhaeuser Fellow in Environmental Studies at AEI and a senior fellow at the Pacific Research Institute. He is also an adjunct fellow of the John Ashbrook Center and a former Bradley Fellow at the Heritage Foundation. Mr. Hayward studies the environment, law, political economy, and the presidency. He is author of the annual Index of Leading Environmental Indicators, published jointly by the AEI Press and the Pacific Research Institute. Mr. Hayward contributes to AEI’s Environmental Policy Outlook series and has authored numerous books, including Greatness (Crown, 2005), The Age of Reagan: The Fall of the Old Liberal Order, 1964–1980 (Crown, 2001), and Churchill on Leadership: Executive Success in the Face of Adversity (Crown, 1998). He is the coauthor of the forthcoming Air Quality in America: A Dose of Reality on Air Pollution Levels, Trends, and Health Risks (AEI Press). Mr. Hayward has also had articles published in National Review, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Reason, The Weekly Standard, Policy Review, and the Chicago Tribune.
