Pharmaceutical price controls have become a controversial political issue. Numerous federal and state legislators have proposed reducing pharmaceutical prices by various methods. President Clinton's proposed out-patient drug benefit for Medicare-with special mechanisms for negotiating drug prices--is expected to be one of the high-visibility legislative proposals Congress considers in this election year.
At this event, John E. Calfee will brief the press on the findings of his timely new study Prices, Markets, and the Pharmaceutical Revolution (AEI, 2000). He will comment on rapidly rising pharmaceutical expenditures, the sources of the ongoing pharmaceutical research revolution, and the threat of price controls. He will also present reasonable solutions for Medicare coverage for pharmaceuticals.
Patricia Danzon, author of Pharmaceutical Price Regulation: National Policies versus Global Interests (AEI, 1997) and Price Comparisons for Pharmaceuticals; A Review of U.S. and Cross-National Studies (AEI, 1999), will address current controversies over pharmaceutical prices here and abroad and proposals to regulate U.S. prices.
