In his recent tour of Japan, South Korea, China, and Mongolia, President George W. Bush committed the United States to promoting political and economic freedom in Asia. In order to secure those freedoms, the U.S. government is upgrading its security relationships throughout the region and is enhancing its engagement with the Chinese government. But there remain major challenges to realizing the president’s agenda in Asia.
How will the United States and Japan operationalize their recent Security Consultative Committee statement on transforming the alliance? Will Washington and Seoul overcome the tension that has chilled bilateral relations in recent years? Will the president’s call for democracy in China nudge the People’s Republic down the path to democracy? How will the United States manage its security agenda in the region in order to enhance the prospects for liberty in Asia?
On December 1, Michael Green, senior director for Asian affairs on the National Security Council, will address these and other questions in a speech at AEI.
