| Jerry A. Hausman, the John and Jennie S. MacDonald Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will address the future of third-generation (3G) services for wireless competition in the United States. The introduction of 3G services will offer cellular users high-speed wireless Internet access and create more broadband services competition. Hausman will present evidence explaining why the European, Asian, and Australian markets have been more successful in achieving higher wireless penetration rates and introducing innovative 3G services than the United States. He will also illustrate that while the United Kingdom and Germany’s 3G spectrum sales were successful in raising billions of dollars, the United States lacks sufficient 3G spectrum availability due to the Federal Communications Commission’s inefficient allocation of spectrum to government entities. |
