Six years have passed since Hong Kong's handover to China, and now there are fears that mainland China might seek to limit Hong Kong's erstwhile freedoms. A proposed change to Hong Kong's Basic Law will outlaw acts of "treason," "subversion," and "sedition." Some allege this will threaten freedom of speech and association. Others see this as an extension of laws already in place.
Is Hong Kong's rule of law being subverted by Beijing? Was the promise of fifty years of one country, two systems achievable? What do these changes in the Basic Law portend for the Hong Kong press and investors? Kin-ming Liu of Hong Kong's Apple Daily, Commissioner Jacqueline Willis of the Hong Kong Trade Office, and Ellen Bork of the Project for the New American Century will discuss the issue.
