In this seminar in AEI’s tax policy series, Boston College professor Fabio Schiantarelli analyzes the effects of government taxes and spending on private investment and capital formation. Using international data, he shows that when public spending--in particular, spending on wages--rises, business investment falls. Professor Schiantarelli finds that whereas taxes also reduce private investment, the effects of government spending on investment are found to be larger than those of taxes.
