Jorge Masetti is the son of the Argentine founder of the Cuban news agency Prensa Latina. He was nine years old when his father was killed in a guerrilla assault in northern Argentina, and Jorge Jr. was raised quite literally as a child of the revolution. For many years he played a crucial role in Cuba’s overseas intelligence operations, particularly in Central America and Colombia. As the son-in-law of Colonel Antonio de la Guardia, one of the highest Cuban intelligence officials, Masetti was particularly close to the structure of power in Cuba.
When his father-in-law, along with General Arnaldo Ochoa, was tried and executed in a purge by Castro in 1989, Masetti and his wife fled to Paris. He has written a remarkable account of his career, published last year in Spain under the title El furor y el delirio (Tusquets Editores, Barcelona).
This is his first visit to Washington and his first meeting with the American press.
