| Recent financial crises have demonstrated a key weakness in the "global financial architecture"--an inability to resolve the sovereign debts of emerging market countries either expeditiously or in a manner regarded as fair by all parties. A number of proposals have been advanced to address this issue, including the exclusion of the IMF entirely from involvement in assisting sovereign debtors and the establishment of a sovereign bankruptcy system administered by the IMF. This symposium brings together prominent experts to discuss the relative merits of alternative approaches and the statement that will be prepared by the four shadow financial regulatory committees at their joint meeting. |
