American Enterprise Institute (AEI) president Arthur Brooks and Kevin Hassett, AEI’s director of economic policy studies, are proud to congratulate AEI adjunct scholar Ioana Petrescu on becoming Romania’s next Finance Minister.

Said Arthur Brooks, “AEI is dedicated to the promotion of young talented scholars and proud that Ioana Petrescu’s value is being recognized by her country.”

Petrescu has been a financial adviser to Prime Minister Victor Ponta for the past 6 months. She has been negotiating on behalf of Romania with the European Commission and the International Monetary Fund, and concentrating on reforming the Romanian tax system.

While at AEI, Petrescu was a National Research Initiative Fellow. Her research focused on the deterrent effect of economic sanctions, as well as on their humanitarian impact. She also worked on taxation in transitional and developing countries and underground economies.

Petrescu left AEI to become an assistant professor at the University of Maryland’s School of Public Policy. Prior to AEI she earned a Ph.D. and M.A. in economics from Harvard University. Her B.A. in mathematics and economics is from Wellesley College.

Petrescu’s writings include Entrepreneurship, Bribes, and The Taxation of Personal Income, The Humanitarian Impact of Economic Sanctions, and Rethinking Economic Sanction Success: Sanctions of Deterrents.
