AEI president Christopher DeMuth announced today that political analyst Michael Barone has joined the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research as a resident fellow. He is the principal coauthor of the highly acclaimed Almanac of American Politics and will continue his study of American politics and government while at AEI.
Barone, who has been writing about American politics, government, and history for more than three decades, is a senior writer at U.S. News & World Report and a contributor to the Fox News Channel. He has been a senior staff editor at Reader's Digest, a staff member of the Washington Post's editorial page, and a vice president of the polling firm Peter D. Hart Research Associates.
His books include Our Country: The Shaping of America from Roosevelt to Reagan (1990), The New Americans: How the Melting Pot Can Work Again (2001), Hard America, Soft America: Competition vs. Coddling and the Battle for the Nation’s Future (2004), and Our First Revolution: The Remarkable British Upheaval That Inspired America's Founding Fathers (2007). His syndicated weekly column appears in newspapers throughout the country.
Barone received a BA from Harvard University and an LLB from Yale Law School.
