RESEARCH   AREAS

Asia-Pacific

AEI's work on the Asia-Pacific includes U.S.-Asian policy in areas such as security and alliance structures, security competition in the region, trade, economic development, democratization, and human rights issues. AEI scholars focus particularly on China, Japan, the Korean Peninsula, and Taiwan. This section of the website gathers together AEI research, books, and events focused on the Asia-Pacific region.

Feature: China's Challenge

Many of America's top strategic thinkers believe America's greatest challenge in the decades to come will be the rise of China. With its expanding economy and increasing military strength, China is positioning itself to challenge the United States in Asia and, in time, globally. AEI scholars are closely watching China's activities.  In The Rise of China, a new book edited by Gary J. Schmitt, experts explore the nature of China's challenge. Schmitt has also been watching the early moves by the Obama administration.  In the first of two National Security Outlooks on China, he notes general continuity between the Obama administration's policies and those of its predecessors when it comes to highlighting the need to sustain relations with long-standing allies in the region and extend engagement with China.  In a recent Economic Outlook, John H. Makin analyzed how China calculates its economic statistics.
