Retirement and Social Security Issues

AEI's program on retirement and Social Security evaluates issues presented by the aging of the U.S. population, pension protection and the economics of retirement, the adequacy of household savings, the financial problems of the Social Security system, and major Social Security reform proposals. This section of the website gathers together AEI research, books, and events focused on Social Security and pensions.

Feature: The COLA Controversy and Retirees

With many other issues dominating the national agenda, Social Security and retirement finance issues have stayed on the back burner for the administration and Congress for most of this year. But they came into the spotlight recently with the official announcement that there would be no cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for Social Security recipients this year for the first time in three decades. Andrew G. Biggs has been writing about the COLA issue. In a new AEI Retirement Policy Outlook, he argues that a COLA for retirees this year would actually be detrimental to them, not helpful. Biggs's work was featured in George Will's recent Washington Post column on COLAs.
