SYNOPSIS

On May 10, 2007, AEI convened the second "Tocqueville on China" working group. " The meeting examined the religious resurgence in contemporary China, assessing how it has impacted both the behavior of believers and their relationship with the state.

As with the previous meeting, the discussion was held under the Chatham House rule. What follows are short summaries of the presentations made at the working group and an overview of the subsequent questions and commentary.

III. The Role of Popular Religions in Chinese Society
IV. The State’s Response: Confucianism and Morality Campaigns

The project has commissioned a series of papers intended to highlight important aspects of civic culture in contemporary China.
