Bear Facts on Polar Bear Protection On April 29, a federal judge gave the Bush administration two weeks to make a final determination about whether the polar bear should be protected under the Endangered Species Act. Designating the bear as endangered would have significant consequences for exploration in the Arctic region and for action on global warming, says AEI resident scholar Kenneth P. Green. His new Environmental Policy Outlook examines what we know about the nineteen subpopulations of these charismatic megafauna. Green, an environmental scientist, then looks at the evidence that global warming has caused--and will cause--a reduction in sea ice and that the bear populations will dwindle because they are dependent on sea ice to hunt for prey. Green argues that because of data limitations, it is "essentially impossible" to decide whether polar bears are endangered by global warming or not. Green was recently interviewed by Newsweek about whether polar bears are threatened by global warming. Global Business in Iran: Interactive

A new AEI web tool, "Global Business in Iran: Interactive," documents major financial transactions with the Islamic Republic between 2000 and 2007. The findings, based on open-source reporting, are organized by country, economic sector, company, and financial institution. The Institute's researchers have documented more than 300 transactions amounting to more than $150 billion. The interactive tool will be updated regularly as new information comes in.
