October 17-18:
Experts Meeting: "The Politics of NATO Enlargement." The NAI held a conference in Alpbach, Austria in cooperation with the European Forum Alpbach.

September 9:
Press Briefing: Richard Holbrooke, Jeane Kirkpatrick, Anthony Lake, and Paul Wolfowitz, on behalf of NAI, presented a statement with 133 prominent signatures in support of NATO enlargement.

July 24:
Roundtable: “The Political and Cultural Dimensions of NATO Enlargement.” NAI hosted NATO Secretary-General Javier Solana and former National Security Adviser Anthony Lake for a roundtable discussion.

June 20:
Book-signing: NAI hosted Polish journalist Radek Sikorski for the presentation of his book Full Circle (Simon and Schuster).

May 16-18:
Congress of Phoenix: The NAI’s 1997 annual congress was held in Phoenix, AZ.

May 13:
Senate Briefing: President Vaclav Havel of the Czech Republic participated in an NAI briefing co-hosted by Senators Kyl, Liberman, Mikulski, and Roth.

May 8:
Lecture: Margarita Mathiopoulos, vice president of Norddeutsche Landesbank, discussed emerging trends in US-German relations.

April 22:
Roundtable: The NAI hosted Adrian Severin, foreign minister of Romania, for a discussion of NATO expansion and related security issues.

April 4:
Roundtable: NAI hosted former vice chancellor of Austria, Erhard Busek, for a discussion of “the Southeast European Cooperative Initiative.”

March 14:
Roundtable: NAI hosted the deputy foreign minister of Poland, Mr. Towpik, and the head of the America Section of the Polish Foreign Ministry, Mr. Kozlowski, for a luncheon discussion.

March 12:
Roundtable: NAI hosted a group of visiting German educators for a discussion of think tanks and American foreign policy.

March 7:
Roundtable: NAI hosted a delegation of Bulgarian parliamentarians at AEI.

March 4:
Roundtable: “Priorities in German Foreign Policy.” NAI, in cooperation with the Hanns Seidel Foundation, sponsored a discussion with Christian Schmidt, member, Foreign Relations Committee, the German Bundestag.

February 20:
Conference: “Making the World Safe for Nationalism—and Vice Versa.” NAI, in cooperation with the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX), sponsored a conference at AEI on the evolving role of nationalism and the nation-state.
