US-EU Trade and Economic Relations Panel Discussion with EU Commissioner Pascal Lamy. Organized by the New Atlantic Initiative and AEI Trade Policy Center. Panelists included Cecilia Julien (Embassy of Sweden), Geza Feketukuty (Monterey Institute of Commercial Diplomacy), Claude E. Barfield (AEI), and EU Commissioner for Trade Pascal Lamy. December 13:
Roundtable Discussion on NATO and EU Enlargement. A small group of policy experts from the United States and Europe convened in London to discuss the next round of NATO enlargement.

November 20:
Lecture by Charles Moore, editor of The Daily Telegraph. In a speech at AEI’s Wohlstetter Conference Center, Moore, a leading Euro-skeptic, argued against the UK joining the Euro and in favor of the UK considering membership in NAFTA.

November 20:
Roundtable Discussion and Lunch with Veton Surroi. Veton Surroi, editor of the Pristina-based Koha Ditore discussed current issues in the Balkans with a small group of NAI invitees.

October 27-28:
Madrid Conference: "The Crisis in the Middle East, Challenges of Iraq and Iran." Approximately forty leading policy experts, journalists, and academics attended an NAI roundtable in Madrid to discuss current issues in the Middle East as well as Western priorities and strategies for the region.

October 26:
NAI Strategic Dialogue in Berlin. Twelve journalists, political advisers, and policy analysts attended an NAI roundtable on the subject of transatlantic relations and NATO expansion at Berlin's Kempinski Adlon Hotel.

October 25:
NAI Strategic Dialogue in London. An NAI-led delegation of foreign policy experts attended a roundtable of the Royal Institute of International Affairs on US foreign policy and US-European relations after the elections.

October 11-12:
Dubrovnik Conference: "NAI roundtable on the shape of the post-Milosevic Balkans." NAI, in association with the Project for the New American Century and the German Marshall Fund of the United States, held a roundtable discussion in Dubrovnik, Croatia on the topics of Montenegro and Balkan stability. Attendees included journalists, policy analysts, and government officials from the Balkans, Europe, and the U.S.

September 12:
Roundtable Discussion and Dinner with Natan Sharansky. Israeli politician and former Soviet dissident Natan Sharansky discussed a range of topics, including Middle East security issues and recent developments in Russia, with a small group of NAI invitees.

September 7:
Lecture by Richard Butler, former executive chairman of UNSCOM. NAI and the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs hosted Ambassador Richard Butler, former executive chairman of UNSCOM and diplomat-in-residence at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. Butler discussed the current situation in Iraq and its influence on Middle East Security.

July 24:
Meeting of Kosovo strategies. A group of foreign policy experts, many specializing in Balkan issues, discussed prospects of future strategies in Kosovo. The dinner served as a follow up to the recent NAI delegation to the Balkans, led by New York Governor George Pataki.

July 18:
Dinner with Charles Moore, editor of the Daily Telegraph (London). A leading Euro-skeptic, Moore argued against the UK joining the Euro, and in favor of UK membership in NAFTA.

July 17:
Lecture by Ambassador Richard Butler. This event was held in Jerusalem, and was co-sponsored by NAI and the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs. Mr. Butler spoke on the subject of "The Emerging Threat of Iraq and the Crisis of Global Security."

July 13:
Dinner with Limor Livnat, member, Israeli Knesset. Ms. Livnat, a member of the Likud party, and former minister in the Israeli government from 1996 to 1998, spoke to a group about current Mid-East issues. Burak and Arafat discussed her July 12 op-ed in the New York Times at the Camp David peace accords.

July 12:
Dinner with German Green Party Officials. Andrea Fischer, the German federal minister of health, and Reinhard Buetikofer, political director of the German Green Party, joined with Matthias Berninger, a member of the German Bundestag to lead a round table dinner discussion. The dinner was an opportunity for leading German Greens to meet and discuss a range of issues with leading conservative public policy officials from Washington.

June 27:
Dinner and Discussion with Marc Perrin de Brichambaut. NAI hosted a roundtable discussion with Mr. Brichambaut, senior adviser at the French Ministry of Defense. Issues discussed included the European reaction to the US Missile Defense, and the 2002 military goals set for EU countries.

June 25 to 29:
NAI Delegation to Kosovo, Montenegro, and Bosnia: A delegation led by New York Governor George Pataki and former Ambassador Morton Abramowitz led a delegation to Kosovo, Montenegro, and Bosnia to meet with high-level government leaders to discuss Balkan issues.

June 13:
Dr. Gedmin briefed members on the German Green Party on U.S. foreign policy.

June 12:
Dr. Gedmin briefed German Marshall Fund Memorial Members on U.S. foreign policy.

May 12-13:
Regional Roundtable: Roundtable Meeting on American Missile Defense, Iraq, and European Defense Policy held in Madrid.

May 8:
Dinner with Joschka Fischer. Senators Fred Thompson and Jon Kyl co chaired a dinner discussion with German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer.

April 28-30:
Regional Roundtable: "Is Euro-Atlantic Integration Still on Track? Opportunities and Obstacles." Hosted by Slovakian Prime Minister Mikulás Dzurinda in Bratislava, this meeting addressed a range of political and security issues including NATO expansion and EU Enlargement.

April 13:
Dinner Discussion: Roundtable dinner discussion on the issue of American Hegemony. Participants included Senators John Kyl and Gordon Smith as well as Stephen Hadley, Jeane Kirkpatrick, Charles Lane, and Joshua Muravchik.

April 5:
Roundtable Series on Turkey: Dinner roundtable with Donald Bandler, U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus.

March 10-12:
Meeting: "NAI Meeting on Balkan Strategies". As follow up to two delegation trips to the region, a group of ten Americans and ten Europeans led by Jeane Kirkpatrick and Morton Abramowitz met in Paris to discuss various issues such as: the status of Kosovo after the war; strategies for dealing with the Milosevic regime; and the possibility of Montenegro achieving separation peacefully from Serbia.

March 1:
Roundtable Series on Turkey "A New Paradigm for the Middle East Peace Process: Lessons from the Past." Lunch discussion on Turkey’s role in the Middle East with Dore Gold, former Isreali Ambassador to the United Nations and adjunct scholar at the American Enterprise Institute.

February 24:
Luncheon Discussion: Luncheon with Thomas Enders and Jean Louis Gergorin on defense restructuring. Thomas Enders is director of corporate strategy, Dasa (designated member of the Executive Committee EADS; director of Defense & Civil systems). Jean Louis Gergorin is director of corporate strategy, Aerospatiale Matra (designated member of Executive Committee EADS; director of Strategy).

February 4:
Roundtable Discussion: "American Missile Defense and the Allies". The New Atlantic Initiative hosted a group of senior members of parliament from more than one dozen European countries to discuss and debate ESDI and missile defense.

February 2:
Panel and Luncheon Discussion: "Montenegro and Serbia: Achieving Separation Peacefully". The New Atlantic Initiative, in association with the German Marshall Fund of the U.S. and the Balkan Action Council, hosted Prime Minister of Montenegro, Filip Vujanovic, for a half-day conference at the American Enterprise Institute.

February 1:
Panel Discussion: "European Defense, American Missile Defense". Is the Alliance Coming Apart? NAI hosted Friedbert Pflüger, chairman of the German Bundestag’s Committee on EU Affairs and Peter Rodman of the Nixon Center for a panel discussion on American missile defense and ESDI. Christopher Makins, president of the Atlantic Council of the U.S., provided a comment.
