The American Enterprise Institute’s National Research Initiative (NRI) provides research grants and visiting fellowships to university-based professors and other intellectuals to support books, monographs, working papers, edited volumes, and other types of original research on U.S. domestic public policy issues.

Purpose

NRI has two goals: to help AEI collaborate with scholars who are doing important work on issues that are relevant to the Institute's interests and to provide the support that is needed for these scholars to have a greater influence on the policy debate.

Focus

The program focuses on a broad range of U.S. domestic public policy issues, including: tax, entitlement, and fiscal policy; government regulation; education; social welfare; health care; domestic security; the legal system; immigration; and politics and political institutions. It emphasizes work that is intellectually rigorous, empirical, and practical; that is based on real-world considerations; and that is addressed to policymakers and a sophisticated general audience.

Support

NRI provides its scholars with extensive resources and support while at AEI by offering:

  • Financial assistance to conduct research and writing
  • Research and editorial assistance
  • Organization of workshops for review and discussion of work-in-progress
  • Publication and dissemination of completed work
  • Op-Ed and article placement, Click here to read more about NRI short publications
  • Opportunities for Congressional testimony
  • NRI also sponsors events, conference series, and book forums to promote discussion on relevant domestic public policy issues.  Academics often participate in these events as presenters, panelists, or discussants.  Click here to read more about NRI events.

Featured NRI Book

In Deconstructing the Republic: Voting Rights, the Supreme Court, and the Founders' Republicanism Reconsidered, Anthony A. Peacock (Utah State University) argues that the Voting Rights Act undermines the Founders' vision of government by emphasizing racial and ethnic group rights over individual rights.
