Members of the AEI research faculty are generally designated as Resident Scholars (individuals whose professional background is primarily in academic research), Resident Fellows (individuals whose professional background is primarily in government, business, or journalism), or Senior Fellows (the most senior and accomplished members of the Institute's faculty).

In addition, several AEI scholars and fellows hold named chairs indicating that their positions are supported by an endowment provided by a particular individual or institution.

When an AEI scholar or fellow is designated as visiting rather than resident, this indicates that he or she is either at AEI for a temporary period (such as a university professor on a sabbatical) or is primarily affiliated with another institution and works at AEI part time (such as a university professor who is at AEI one or two days a week).

Adjunct scholars and fellows are individuals at other institutions who participate in AEI research, writing, and conferences.

Finally, Research Fellows are younger members of the AEI research staff engaged in their own research; typically they are former AEI research assistants who have been promoted to positions of responsibility for their own research, or graduate or post-graduate students who have received fellowships to pursue their studies at AEI.
