AEI’s next Black Coffee Briefing will take place on Tuesday, October 21, with a keynote address by Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), the second-ranking Republican in the U.S. Senate and chairman of the Foreign Operations Appropriations Subcommittee. Senator McConnell will speak about his travels this month in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the future of the war against terrorism.
The briefing will begin with a panel discussion featuring Danielle Pletka, vice president of foreign and defense policy studies at AEI, who recently returned from an extended research trip to Iraq; Karlyn H. Bowman, resident fellow at AEI, who will question popular assumptions about U.S. public opinion on Iraqi reconstruction efforts; and Gary Schmitt, executive director of the Project for the New American Century, who will speak about the implications of the ongoing counterinsurgency campaign for U.S. defense policy and national security. Reuel Marc Gerecht, resident fellow at AEI, will serve as moderator.
