What policy should the United States have toward Iran? Negotiations over the Iranian nuclear program are proving difficult, and the European Union, the United Nations, and the United States have been unable to agree on the next steps. Democracy and democratic opposition movements are on the rise in neighboring countries, but the situation inside Iran seems as stagnant as ever. In addition, Iran remains a major sponsor of terrorism.
In the just published Eternal Iran: Continuity and Chaos (Palgrave Macmillan, November 2005), AEI resident scholar Michael Rubin and Patrick Clawson, director of research at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, provide the historical backdrop crucial to understanding Iran's contentious and potentially dangerous politics. The book includes a special look at Iran's economy, its minority population, and an in-depth analysis of how the current tensions between the reformers and the traditionalists influence Iranian relations with the West.
The authors' presentation will be followed by remarks from AEI resident fellow Reuel Marc Gerecht and Barry Rubin, editor of The Middle East in Focus Series, of which this book is a part. A wine and cheese reception will follow.
