America faces a new culture war. This is not the culture war of the 1990s over religion, abortion, guns, and gay rights, nor is it a war between Democrats and Republicans. Rather, it is a struggle between the traditional American culture of free enterprise and the current drifts toward a European-style social democracy. Mr. Brooks will also describe the stakes for both sides in this struggle and outline the strategies each side will need if it hopes to prevail.
This Bradley Lecture is based on Mr. Brooks’s new book, The Battle: How the Fight between Free Enterprise and Big Government Will Shape America’s Future (Basic Books, June 1, 2010), which focuses on public opinion toward free enterprise today.
Arthur C. Brooks is an economist and a social scientist. He has been president of AEI since January 2009. Prior to joining AEI, he was the Louis A. Bantle Professor of Business and Government Policy at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. He is the author of eight books, including Who Really Cares, Gross National Happiness, and a textbook on social entrepreneurship.
