Event Summary

According to Orrin Hatch, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, the United States is on the precipice of opportunity with two of the most ambitious international trade agreements in America’s history: the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and Trans-Atlantic Trade Investment Partnership (TTIP). During an AEI event on Friday, Chairman Hatch outlined his trade policy agenda for the 114th Congress, emphasizing the importance of strong Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) legislation.

He discussed the major principles guiding his past and current efforts to renew TPA legislation, including preserving the fundamental principles of US trade and economic policy, recognizing and addressing the opportunities and challenges American job creators face and workers encounter when conducting business around the world, and rebalancing the relationship between Congress and the Executive Branch when negotiating, implementing, and enforcing international trade agreements.

Chairman Hatch emphasized that future trade negotiations must preserve strong intellectual property rights protections, including privacy and cyber theft; maintain strong investor-state dispute-settlement provisions; eliminate trade distortions and unfair competition by state-owned enterprises; and significantly reduce tariffs on US exports of goods, services, and agricultural products.
