Politics and Public Opinion

AEI’s politics and public opinion scholars are highlighting the links among the pressing demographic, social, economic, and political issues of our day; public sentiment; and the deepest trends that characterize American life. Their research is informed by the understanding that freedom and prosperity depend on healthy social and political institutions.

Place, Policy, and Dynamism

Americans have historically pursued opportunity by moving geographically, job-hopping, and trying new things. As a result, cities and states competed for workers, their populations growing in step with their economies. But in recent decades, migration has slowed and regions have grown unequal. Fast-growing metropolitan areas have become too expensive for lower-skilled workers, and lower-cost places do not attract skilled workers as they once did. Dynamism has been in decline in too many places around the country.

The AEI Polling Report is a monthly newsletter that covers current polling and public opinion on the most prominent issues in American politics today. Authored by AEI Senior Fellow Karlyn Bowman and researcher Samantha Goldstein, it aggregates data from polling sources such as Gallup, NORC, Ipsos, the Pew Research Center, YouGov, and Quinnipiac University to provide a comprehensive view of today’s political, social, and civic atmosphere. Specific topics include issues affecting the executive, legislative, and judicial branches; politics and elections; polls on current social issues; and issues pertaining to state government. The AEI Polling Report series also includes historical comparisons of attitudes through the years.
